Prema Baughman
Artist Statement
For this series I wanted to focus on portraying the theme of absence. I used transparency and geometric abstraction to create a sense of emptiness. These aspects made it apparent that the figures were not in the space, but rather just impressions in it because the viewer is able to see past them. I experimented with figures and utilized body language to further support the theme by posing them slouched over or looking out into the distance as if they were longing for someone. I also used repetition of objects and body parts in the environment to portray a sense of loss with reality. This can act as another form of absence, instead of with a person it is with the self. I wanted viewers to be able to take away a message that they felt resonated with them specifically, so I wanted to include multiple interpretations of the theme. My style changes depending on the subject matter. I want to be drawn to the main figure's face, so I focused on detail and blending the skin tones to create a more realistic look. For the backgrounds and the figures clothing, I used broader strokes to not draw attention away from the figure, but also retained high saturations with the colors to maintain interest in the areas surrounding the figures.
